This article was published just this past April and was in reference to a meeting held in Congress for the "American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009" where Al Gore was to speak as a representative and give some global warming facts. Apparently hired by the Democrats of The House, Al Gore was to speak against a Republican hired specialist on the issue of global warming. This "specialist" was the UK’s Lord Christopher Monckton, former science advisor to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. It is said that Monckton was not permitted to speak and instead an ex-senator was given the job of refuting Gore's claims. First off, I find it extremely interesting that they post a picture of a digital thermometer with a reading of -49 degrees. As we have discussed in class, weather and climate are two different things and just because it is freezing in one area does not justify the opposition. I believe the most interesting part of this article is actually the video of Christopher Monckton giving his speech about "The Global Warming Hoax." After listening to it, I found it ridiculous that at one point he says that warmer weather is better, that is why most life flourishes in the tropics and many species do not live in the arctic. He does not realize that the arctic has an immeasurable affect on climate, ocean current, and even the food chain. Overall, I believe that Mr. Monckton is ill informed on the matter of global warming and has no real basis for his claim of it being a hoax.

Something I forgot to post, Christopher Monckton actually got his degree in Journalism and did really nothing with science in his professional career.

ReplyDeleteI found the video to be really interesting. I like how he says, "Why do hardly any species live in the Arctic? Because you freeze your nuts off, and it makes reproduction difficult." I thought that made him sound really educated...
