Climate change in the news

If you go to CNN Online, you will find (under Science) a Time story about India, climate change and the upcoming Copenhagen summit. This is a good illustration of the complexities that will be involved in these negotiations. Here is the link: http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1921138,00.html

Also, within the story, there is a link to a photo series "Fragile Planet" by Stuart Franklin. This is one example of an artist response to climate change. There is one image from Spitzbergen which appears in your readings for this week.

  1. Adding to the complexity -- India has 1.15 billion people, coming in second only to China. Only 2.4% of the land mass in the world, but over 15% of the population. And in terms of population, it's still growing!

When I visited India last December, I saw many small businesses like the one described in the article -- small stalls that specialized in one task. For example, one stall just repaired tires. Another sold hot tea. Most of the stalls had fires that burned wood or coal.
