"Climate Debt"

My political science teacher forwarded this story to the class. It's a story from Rollingstone magazine about the Copenhagen talks. The developing countries are coming out and saying that they want the developed countries, mainly the US, to take responsibility for our climate damage. They don't think it's fair that we should all have to make the same sacrifices if they haven't done anything to cause climate change in the first place. They're calling this "climate debt."

I think they have a very good point. It's interesting that countries like the Maldives, that have never done anything to cause climate change, are the ones suffering the most. I really do think we owe them, and that we definitely need to take responsibility for what we've done.

  1. I think that in situations like this it is most certainly the duty of the offender(s) to correct the problem. In the process, we may be able to become leaders in the crusade against a dying planet.
Unfortunately, this is like most of the injustice in the world, where those affected most are unable to have a large enough voice to propel change. The Maldives are a small country, and unless a larger country takes a stand for them their voice may be lost.
