The hope brought about by cop 15 may have taken a turn for the worst last Tuesday (Dec 8th). Apparently a document leaked that drafted a plan which basically puts all the power for climate change negotiations in the hands of rich developed countries. It completely ignores UN agreement and goes against the Kyoto protocol by unfairly compelling developing countries to reduce emissions, even though developed countries are resposible for most of the emissions in the atmosphere today. It doesn't really take the needs of developing countries into consideration.
It is believed the document was drafted by countries like the US, UK and Denmark in the absence of other developing countries, leading to a bit of mistrust between the parties. Apparently when it leaked, it threw many into quite a panic. The big countries are now saying that this was only a draft and was just an "idea" to be discussed during all of the upcoming negotiations. Yes, well for the sake of the developing countries out there, I hope this 'Danish Text' never makes it to the drawing board.
